NORWICH (WBNG) — The Chenango County Department of Planning and Development is expanding on the county’s greener future through the “Clean Energy Communities” grant program.
The grants are through NYSERDA and Planner Allison Yacano explains the county is currently working on three different grant awards.
Yacano said through resident participation, they were able to receive funding for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
“Twenty-five residents purchased electric vehicles in Chenango County which allowed us to get a $15,000 grant,” said Yacano. “Using that funding, we’re looking to install some electric vehicle charging stations.”
Yacano also noted that they received a $10,000 grant as well which they used to purchase electric landscaping equipment to some county organizations like the sheriff’s department and the airport.
Their third grant includes possibly purchasing electric vehicles for county organizations to utilize.
“Specifically, some of the vehicles are going to go to the Area Agency on Aging and they’re going to use those for their meal delivery service,” said Yacano. “So, that will supplement their current vehicles as well as be able to reach more Chenango County residents for meal delivery.”
The planning department is working on about $200,000 in grants in total. Yacano said if residents continue to tell the planning department about when they purchase an electric vehicle, the faster the county will receive grant awards.
